African Wild Dog
"Drifting Into Silence"
I feel this title has a profound melancholy, emphasising the slow and inevitable vanishing.
I feel it carries such a quiet yet profound weight—perfect for the way the artwork portrays the African Wild Dog’s fading existence. It’s haunting in the best way, leaving space for reflection on what’s being lost.
I also feel, "Drifting Into Silence" captures the quiet yet profound disappearance of the African Wild Dog, a species whose presence is slipping away from the world. Through graphite, I render its form with detail, bringing its gaze directly toward the viewer—an intimate connection, as though it pleads to be remembered.
The body, angled at 2 o’clock, fades into the surrounding space, dissolving softly into the light like a departing spirit. The interplay of shading and softness isn’t merely a technical decision; it symbolizes the fragile transition between existence and memory, between life and loss.
By allowing the rear of its form to dissolve into a spectral abstraction, I feel. that I portray the inevitable drift toward silence—toward a world where this magnificent creature is no longer roaming. The contrast between the sharpness of its eyes and the vanishing edges of its body speaks to the imbalance between presence and absence, urging contemplation. This piece is both tribute and warning, asking us to reflect on the beauty we might one day only recall in whispers.
